I think this is his magnum opus.Other people say "Purple Rain" but that's just becuz of the sales.On this album , he really went there.He got a helluva lot more funker [D.M.S.R], originated a funk/pop r&b sound as displayed by Hip-Hop artists such as OutKast [Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), All The Critics Love U In New York] & made a funk chant song, the title track.Must have.
The more he came with somethin' new, the better he got.The title track wuz a banger, let alone my personal fav, "Private Joy".It makes my windows rattle!
Homie said fuck it on this one, & flaunted his own brand of sexuality which didn't catch on at 1st, but the album was a hit & began his love with synthesizers & drum machines.Classic shit right here.
This is when he made alot of people take him seriously."I Wanna Be Your Lover" & "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" were instant hits, & really got the ball started on his songwrting growth.Let's not forget "I Feel For You" a funky joint which wuz a hit for Chaka Khan in 1984.Dope album.
This album wuz his 'commercial' debut.When the single 'Soft and Wet' wuz released, it didn't spark a fire with radio & the album fell down the charts.I guess Warner Bros wuz a lil heated & spent a lot of dough on promotion for homie, so he wuz in debt.Still a great listen.
If you like that old school Rap-A-Lot sound like I do, you'll like this right here.Back in the day, everyone bought this album just off of the strength of The Geto Boys' name being on the cover.Don't play around the children.
Ultimate classic right here.I used to play this album all the fucking time-probably for 2 years straight.This is the 1999 re-issue from when Arista bought Profile Records.They were out of print, so I found a small record shop & was able to order it (& Classic 220) straight from the company.D, KK & Quik show & prove on this right here.
One thing that seperates DJ Quik's production from the rest is instead of ridin' the G-Funk wave out like everyone else, he twisted & turned it into his own sound-which is VERY present on his 1998 LP "Rhythm-al-ism"-and he always spread the love to the homies.This album should've went platinum, but as always, people listen with their fucking eyes.
